JET Program Vlog #12 - toiletries and contraception

JET Program Vlog #12 - toiletries and contraception

I ran out of shampoo today, so I was inspired to chat about what personal products you should bring.
Even in a small town like mine, you can get pretty much everything you need. Japan has lots of pharmacies (kusuriya) that have all kinds of products - being able to read the kanji on the package and know what you're getting is another story. :)
But I've talked to many JETs who miss certain products - like specific brands of toothpaste and soap and razors and tampons, etc. etc. so if you think you'll be one of these people, then try to bring your favorite stuff with you or arrange to have someone ship the stuff to you.
The website I mention:
http://www.fbcusa.com/eng/
The Foreign Buyers club
and a similar online site:
http://www.theflyingpig.com/tfp/shop.asp
another good website with a discount for the above shopping site:
http://www.jetsetjapan.com/
Lots of good info for JETs at JetSet
OK - more soon.

Gatsby is the Mandom Corp's male line of hygiene products. When I went last April there was probably about 5-6 different scents for spray deodorant alone. If you were to have heard of Gatbsy it would either be because you style your hair (very popular wax) or because of the Kimura Takuya "I can give you Gatsby" commercials on TV. I think I'm gunna upload the commercial just for the hell of it.

The nearest "big" city is Matsue, the capital of Shimane. It's about an hour away by train or car. The nearest major city is Hiroshima, which is about 4 hours away. Yeah - you can bring just about anything - just pack it in your checked baggage and not your carry-on bagThe one time I got stopped on my way back in, they saw some DVDs in my bag and they asked "Porn?" The customs guy knew this word in English - I said, "no" and he let me thru.

Yeah - good catch - I forgot about sunscreen, which you should bring with you. Thanks

Is "Gatsby" a line available in Japan? If so, I'll look for it. Yeah - AXE is strong, but some days, like today (so HUMID!!) you need it.

Yeah - I go to the grocery store at least twice a week for two reasons - my refrigerator is TINY - it just won't hold that much stuff, and this is mostly cuz Japanese people buy so much fresh food all the time. I'll try to get some footage at my local grocery store if they allow me to do it.

Good video. Another thing I wasn't quite sure about. Did not think it'd be this hard to find some of those things there. I do like a certain brand of deodorant, cologne, toothpaste, etc. so I will just have family ship that stuff to me once in a while. Thank you very much for all these videos. I have watch and commented on all of them (#1-11 including the a,b,c). Keep the videos coming.

if you like eating american style foods say with a lot of beef and pork you will pay top yen. There is nothing there like walmart or sams club in japan either. I think you would like most of the food they have in grocery stores. I suppose you could buy a weeks worth of food ,but be warned the shopping carts are tiny.

I have a question, what is the food like there, I mean more like, are there supermarket, is it difficult in buy say a weeks or so groceries? Again it is alittle out of JET Vlog, again, thanks for your time for making these. :)

"Ban for Men Citrus", the only deoderant/anti-persperant I've found here that works. "eve", a popular brand of ibuprofen a.k.a. advil. Cheap. "serona cream", hydrocortisone cream. Expensive. "Drewell", pronounced do-ri-e-ru, the first O.T.C. sleeping pill. "Myrest" is a cheaper brand of the same chemical. "Damarin Ice Spray" for athlete's foot, and anything else itchy and fungal. Menthol-like burning can be painful, but it works. Birth control pills. Very hard to get, I hear.

When I first went to Japan I found an Aquafresh white toothpaste & thought it was only in Japan... then I found it over here at shoppers drug mart haha. Also I hate AXE with a passion. I really think it stinks. I like the Gatsby line of spray deodorant, it is very mild and masks smells as opposed to completely replacing it like AXE does. As always, a very informative video for those interested in JET, and life compared to North America. 5 stars.

I'd say bring your own sunscreen, too. The only sunscreen I could find when I was there was this little teeny bottle, and it was really expensive. But I was waaaay down in Kyushu, where the sun pretty much sits right ON the earth, so it was hot and I needed sunscreen. Woo! JETBLOG!

Hey myargonauts, I have 2 questions, one doesnt regard this video, one does. Firstly, is it possible to bring things such as AXE or Toothpaste with you? I'm not sure if the planes allow it? Secondly, how far are you from the nearest big city? Do you get time to go in often or...?
